What Are SAP Calculations? Otherwise known as the Standard Assessment Procedure, SAP was introduced by the Government to compare and assess the performance of a building. Primarily this includes investigations into the environmental and energy performances to make sure they meet current Building Regulations.
When these are carried out, they aim to assess exactly how much energy a newly developed building will consume. These will be assessed against a specific comfort and service level for an estimated behaviour of the occupants.
Once completed, these calculations are required to produce either an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) or Predicted Energy Assessment. The final calculation will provide a score of somewhere between 1 and 100 for the estimated annual energy cost.
Any calculations are produced using notes and construction drawings, however there is never a need to visit a site. Any design stage calculations need to meet a number of specific targets, including fabric efficiency, overheating and CO2 Emissions.
Calculations During Draft Designs Once a designer has provided drawings and plans, a SAP assessor will then be able to begin the process of producing a calculation. A summary of any numerical data provided will be completed. These include floor areas, heat loss (walls, floors, roofs), windows and doors, as well as storey heights.
From this, the performance of thermal elements will then be created. These are known as the U-Values and the higher value relates to the greater loss of heat. Data which is then entered relates to:
Floors Type of Dwelling Roofs Walls Ventilation Renewable Technology Windows Roof Lights Energy Efficient Lighting Doors Hot Water Generation Main and Secondary Space Heating
